Select text on any page — an article, a post, a Google Doc — and Nota says how machine-like it reads, with the measured error rate beside the score; what hidden characters it carries, checked in your browser; and, when you ask, where its words appear on the open web. Looking for the extension…

Until the Web Store listing is live, load it yourself.
Chrome calls this “loading an unpacked extension”. It is the same build we will submit to the store, with the same fixed extension ID — so everything, including “Connect the extension”, works the same way.
- Download the zip and unzip it. You get a folder named

chrome://extensionsinto the address bar — or menu ⋮ → Extensions → Manage extensions. (Edge:edge://extensions· Brave:brave://extensions· Arc:arc://extensions.) - Switch on Developer mode — the toggle in the top-right corner of that page.
- Click “Load unpacked” and choose the
know-nota-chromefolder you unzipped (the folder itself, not the zip, not a file inside it). Know Nota appears in the list, switched on. - Pin it. Click the puzzle-piece icon next to the address bar and press the pin beside Know Nota, so the mascot sits in your toolbar.
- Use it. Click the mascot (or press ⌘⇧K / Ctrl⇧K) to open the panel — it slides in from the right. Or select any text on a page, right-click → Verify selection with Nota. Sign in inside the panel, or connect it from this page while signed in here.
Good to know
- Chrome may show a “Disable developer mode extensions” reminder on launch. That is Chrome being cautious about any unpacked extension; dismiss it. It goes away once the store listing is live.
- Updating: download the new zip, replace the folder’s contents, then press ↻ on the Know Nota card in
chrome://extensions. The Web Store version will update itself. - Removing: the Remove button on that card. Nothing is left behind — the extension stores only your session and settings, in the browser.
Permissions you will see
Read and change your data on knownota.com — that is the only site it can talk to. Anything else is asked per site, only when you press a button that needs it. The right-click menu works everywhere without any grant.

Where you read
Right-click a selection → Verify selection with Nota, or open the panel and press Verify page text. The result slides in from the side and stays out of the page. The right-click menu works on every site with no permission grant at all.

Where you write
On a Google Doc, Verify this Doc reads the document through your own access. Writing Record reads its revision history: how much arrived keystroke by keystroke, how much in blocks, when, in how many sessions — and lets you run AI detection on each large paste.
Verify the document afterwards and the counts (never the pasted text) travel inside the signed record.
What you can’t see
Hidden characters on this page inspects the visible text of any page in your browser — zero-width marks, look-alike letters, direction overrides, watermark carriers — and marks each one on the page.
No account, no network, no quota. The one check that is a fact, not a reading.
What it never does.
Scan feeds or pages on its own
Nothing leaves your browser until you press Verify — and then only to knownota.com. The optional “Verify with Nota” button on X, LinkedIn and Reddit is off by default, per site, and manual.
Ask for access to every site
It reads a page only when you ask, on sites you allow — Chrome asks you, site by site. The right-click menu needs no grant anywhere.
Send who wrote a post
Only the text you chose goes out — never the author, the URL of a feed, or your browsing. No profiles, no “feed health”, no scores on named people.
Keep your text
Pasted text is discarded after the scan unless you switch on “keep the document in my record” — the same switch as on the site.
